"I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough;
we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do."

II — Scienziato & Anatomista
"The noblest pleasure is the joy of understanding."
L'Uomo Vitruviano · 1490
Studies of the proportions of the human body in relation to architecture — a symbol of Leonardo's bridging of art and science, inspired by Vitruvius.
Nota bene: la proporzione è la legge del cosmo.Anatomia del Cuore · c. 1511
Over 30 years, Leonardo dissected more than 30 human corpses, producing anatomical drawings of unprecedented accuracy. His studies of the heart anticipated modern cardiology.
Il cuore non è la sede dell'anima, ma del sangue.Il Feto nell'Utero · c. 1510
Among the most celebrated scientific drawings ever made — Leonardo's depiction of a fetus in the womb revealed anatomical structures not confirmed by science for centuries.
L'uomo è la misura di tutte le cose viventi.III — Ingegnere & Inventore
"Iron rusts from disuse; water loses its purity from stagnation and in cold weather becomes frozen; even so does inaction sap the vigour of the mind."
Ornitottero · Flying Machine
An ornithopter with wings modelled on bird anatomy. Designed to be powered by human muscle, anticipating modern aviation by 400 years.
Codex Atlanticus · f.858rCarro Armato · Armored Vehicle
A covered assault vehicle with angled plating to deflect cannon fire — a precursor to the modern tank, designed for Ludovico Sforza around 1487.
British Museum Ms. · 1487Carro Semovente · Self-Propelled Cart
Often considered the world's first programmable robot — a spring-driven cart with a pre-set steering mechanism, the ancestor of the automobile.
Codex Atlanticus · c. 1478Vite Aerea · Aerial Screw
A helical aerial screw intended to compress air and achieve flight — a conceptual predecessor to the modern helicopter, conceived around 1489.
Paris Ms. B · f.83v · 1489IV — Architetto & Urbanista
Following the plague of 1484–1485 that killed a third of Milan's population, Leonardo conceived of a radical Città Ideale — a multi-level urban system separating pedestrians from goods vehicles, with canals for sanitation and ventilation. His architectural studies included domed churches, centrally-planned chapels, and structural innovations centuries ahead of their time.
V — Musicista & Scrittore
"Music is the shaping of the invisible."
De Musica & Strumenti
Leonardo was celebrated throughout the courts of Italy as much for his musicianship as his painting.
He played the lira da braccio with virtuosic skill and arrived at the court of Milan bearing not
an easel, but a silver lute fashioned in the shape of a horse's skull — an instrument of his own
invention.
He designed numerous new instruments, studied acoustics, and understood sound as a form of
energy moving through air — decades before such concepts were formalised.
I Codici · Notebooks
Leonardo left behind approximately 7,200 pages of notes and drawings — an encyclopaedia of
the known and imagined world, written in his distinctive mirror script from right to left.
Codex Leicester — geology, water, and celestial bodies.
Codex Atlanticus — machines, weapons, flying devices.
Codex Arundel — architecture, geometry, philosophy.
Codex Windsor — anatomy and natural studies.
